Anti-Anxiety Music
Music has been around just about as long as humans. It’s been used in various ways, across various cultures, as a way to soothe, heal, and memorialize all of the emotional, messy, and beautiful parts of life.
Music is something I often speak about with clients, specifically when clients are struggling with persistent anxiety and depression. I’ve found that I am curious to hear what types of music each of my clients are drawn to, both generally and when in distress. And I find it humorous and connective when I learn many of my clients appreciate a similar genre, artist, or song.
The idea for this blog came to me when, in one week, multiple clients spoke to me about a particular album that soothes them when anxious. It peaked my interest and made me wonder what other genres, albums, or artists might be a go-to when trying to calm anxiety.
So, I asked my team what music they turn to when anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed and compiled a short anti-anxiety music list for you all here. Happy listening!
The music Rikki’s clients (and Rikki!) choose to listen to:
Evermore by Taylor Swift
I have several clients who have identified Evermore specifically as a helpful album when anxious. The thought that always comes to mind when I hear that is this album by Taylor Swift was born out of the pandemic. Taylor wrote these songs during a time in which much of life was put on “pause,” a time when things slowed down for many. I think it makes sense then, that the lyrics, tone, and vibe often pull others (and myself) back toward mindfulness and serve as a reminder to slow down.
The music Nicole turns to:
Kings album by Frameworks or Seven Seas album by Emancipator
I had never heard of either of these albums before speaking with Nicole, but I’m so glad she offered them as recommendations! Upon my first listen I can understand why she gravitates toward them. They offer soothing, intriguing tones without lyrics.
Sierra’s pick for soothing sounds:
Ambient sounds on youtube
Sometimes it’s helpful to listen to relaxing sounds without lyrics or melodies, especially if you’re anxious and trying to complete a task, like studying or working. Searching for ambient sounds on youtube or downloading an app that offers various soothing sounds can help you to reconnect with nature, even if you’re inside. It can also call to nostalgic and soothing memories, which in turn will lift mood and reduce overwhelm.
What Ryan likes to listen to:
Roots Revival Playlist from Spotify
If you want a variety of music, rather than a specific album or artist, check out this playlist for acoustic, mellow tunes. If some of these songs aren’t your vibe, try searching “anti-anxiety playlist” or “relaxation playlist” on spotify.
CiCi’s Pick:
Punjabi music!
I love this pick from CiCi because it’s a reminder that culture and personal history can play such important roles in our overall well-being. Think about your childhood, or a memory from a happy, safe, and carefree time in your life. What were you listening to then? Listening to that music, or something similar, can allow you to feel connected to loved ones and to yourself.
Stefanie’s musical choice when anxious or overwhelmed:
Heavy Metal
This response surprised me so much I laughed out loud! While heavy metal doesn’t seem inherently relaxing to me, listening to music you know you enjoy and connect with, whatever the genre, can improve mood, increase familiarity, safety and comfort, and reduce anxiety.
What Google’s says:
Weightless by Marconi Union
According to Google, after listening to this song, individuals identified a 65% reduction in anxiety. That’s a huge change! If you haven’t heard it before, give it a listen the next time you’re anxious and see if that statistic is accurate for you!
